Using a map as a visitor
A published map is freely accessible (or via authentication, if the manager has configured it — see Integrations and access security). No account is required to browse a public map.
Searching for a place
The search bar at the top of the map lets you find a location, a service or a type of place by name. Suggestions appear as you type, grouped by category (locations, navigation, services, other).
From the keyboard, the Esc key closes the suggestions list and gives the focus back to the map.
Even before typing anything, clicking the search bar directly offers your favorite and recently viewed places — even if you are not signed in (stored locally on your device).
Viewing information about a location
Selecting a point on the map or in the search results opens an information panel showing the place's name, its caption, its type and, where applicable, its accessibility level (accessible, not accessible, PMR-reserved).
Calculating a route
- Enter a starting point and a destination in the dedicated fields (or use your current location as the starting point). The starting point field automatically receives focus when a new route is opened, so you can type right away.
- Use the swap button to quickly reverse the start and destination.
- Run the calculation: the route is displayed on the map, along with the distance and number of steps.
- Follow the step-by-step instructions (move forward, turn, change floor or building) until you reach your destination.
When a route crosses several maps (floors) or several buildings, ownMap automatically finds the best chain of connections between the maps.
Accessibility mode (PMR)
The "Reduced mobility" option calculates a route while avoiding inaccessible obstacles (stairs, etc.). If no accessible route exists, ownMap automatically offers the standard route, indicating that no accessible alternative was found.
Sharing a place or a route
Every location or calculated route can be shared via a copyable link, which reopens the map directly at that spot or with that route preloaded.
Geolocation
If the browser allows it, ownMap can use the device's position to locate you on the map and make it easier to calculate a route from your current location.
Geolocation is not offered on every map: the manager can turn it off, and it is off by default on building maps, since GPS does not work indoors.
