Concepts and prerequisites

Before starting to create your map, it's worth knowing the elements it is made of.

Vocabulary

• Map: the element being visited, generally a building.
• Floor plan: a displayed area, generally a floor.
• Location: a precise place on a floor plan, generally a room, an office, a shop…
• Point of interest: a particular kind of location (restrooms, stairs, etc.). Points of interest are generally displayed at all times.

Layout of an ownMap map

An ownMap map is made up of the following elements:

• back to Explore (ownmap.net)
• location search box
• start a route
• comment button
• level selector
• background floor plan
• point of interest
• information panel
• zoom buttons

Before you start

To create your map on ownMap, you should have already:

• prepared the floor plans to import,
• decided on the locations you want to share.

You can also proceed step by step, floor by floor, if you want to get familiar with the ownMap platform first.
