Create a map

From "My maps", click the "New ownMap map" button to start a new map. A 4-step wizard guides you.

The creation wizard​

  1. Map type: choose between
    • Building: a multi-level building (floors, basements);
    • Plan: a campus, a cemetery, a flat site…
  2. Map name: the short name and long name (see below).
  3. Configuration, depending on the chosen type:
    • for a building, the number of floors above ground and of basement levels. The wizard automatically creates one floor plan per level (a summary such as "4 plans from -1 to +2" is displayed); you will then only need to attach an image to each;
    • for a plan, the source of the map background: an image to import, or an OpenStreetMap base layer (you then position the center on a map and set the width of the covered area).
  4. Map created: a summary suggests the next steps (add an image for each floor plan, add locations, publish the map when it is ready).

A "plan" map only has a single floor plan. On any type of map, the last floor plan cannot be deleted; if you delete the default floor plan, ownMap automatically designates another one (the closest to the ground floor).

Geolocation is turned off by default on "building" maps (GPS does not work indoors), and turned on by default on "plan" maps. It can still be changed in the map's settings.

Basic information​

Two pieces of information are requested at the "Map name" step:

  • a short name for your map (25 characters maximum);
  • a long name, optional.

The short name is used to create a reference used in links to your map. This reference is made of the short name in lowercase, without accents; special characters are replaced with dashes. If another map already uses this reference, a number is automatically appended.

The map's reference stays the same even if you later change the short name. Links to your map contain this reference, and changing it would break every link you have already shared.

If provided, the long name is used instead of the short name in the map's information panel and in map search results.

Settings available after creation​

Once the map is created, its settings are grouped on a single scrolling page, organized into several sections: General, Logo, Visibility, Appearance, Routing, Organization. "Integrations" and "Statistics" are, on the other hand, full-fledged tabs of the map's menu, at the same level as "Settings" (see Integrations and access security and Statistics).

Managing floor plans (importing images, floors, calibration) is no longer done from the settings — it's done directly from a panel docked onto the map's editing canvas (see Adding floor plans).

General

  • Map name (short name and long name).
  • Company name, address: the postal address of your building.
  • Keywords: used to make your map easier to find via the search engine on the ownMap home page.
  • Useful information: practical information shown to visitors.

Logo

  • Customize your map with a logo.

Visibility

  • Publish: lets you publish your map, or not. If it is not published, only you can access it in preview (see Publishing a map). A "Publish" / "Unpublish" shortcut is also available directly in the map's menu, next to "Share" and "Open".
  • Map coordinates: latitude and longitude, so visitors can find it via the search engine on the ownMap home page when they are nearby.

Appearance

  • Map background color: if the background of your floor plans isn't white, you can set its color to avoid showing the plan's boundary.
  • Display mode for your locations (short name, long name…).

Routing

  • A 3-state selector enables the routing features on your map: "Routing disabled" / "Routing enabled" / "Routing enabled (PMR)" (see Routing). The same setting is also available as a quick-access dropdown directly on the editing canvas.

Organization

  • Available for "multi-site" Premium subscriptions, this section lets you manage groups of maps and define a parent map (for example, for a campus: an OpenStreetMap base map as the parent map, grouping the floor plans of the campus's various buildings).
  • Grouped map: includes the map in a map group. Feature reserved for Premium subscriptions.

The plan or subscription associated with the map is managed from Subscriptions and billing.
